[TN-Bird] sharp-shinned hawk

Oven Creek, Goodwater Rd, Cocke Co 12/19/08 3:30 pm
There was a very vociferous Sharp-Shinned Hawk in the trees overhanging the
creek. It called for at least five minutes, then circled, and landed in the
tree again, and squawked some more. Beautiful sight with its colorful
underside in the sun on a 60 degree plus day.

The Belted Kingfisher was noticeably silent, and the Great Blue Heron was quite
a bit upstream from where the hawk was. All the goldfinches, purple finches,
chickadees, nuthatches and titmice were stock still.

After the hawk departed to farther into the woods, the Red-Bellied Woodpecker
was scolding me from the pecan tree next to the house. I was scurrying to
gather the nuts that had come down in the earlier brisk wind..... before Mr.
Pecan-Stealing Woodpecker could get them..... and before the flying squirrels
made their appearance tonight.

A Song Sparrow was singing quite a bit today. And several frogs.

As T.S.Eliot said, "Midwinter spring is its own season."
