[TN-Bird] sandhill crane hunting in Tennessee

March 20, 2008

Recent action of Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is bringing
hunting of sandhill cranes in Tennessee closer to reality. As the state's main
birding organization Tennessee Ornithological Society (TOS) needs to come up
with an official policy.

The subject will be put on the agenda of the next TOS Board of Directors
meeting in Memphis, April 26. The issue will first be considered by TOS
Conservation Policy committee, filtered by them, and then be presented to the
Board.

Opinions expressed in this forum, TN-bird, will be taken into consideration,
but signed letters are most useful. Letters may be sent via email or paper
copy, to me or directly to Melinda Welton or Bob Hatcher, co-chairs of the
Conservation Policy committee. If you are a TOS member please state your
chapter
affiliation. _hatcher2@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx (mailto:hatcher2@xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

chairman Thomas Edwards

Implementation of an open season on sandhill cranes in Tennessee may not be
imminent, but we should not postpone any longer forming a policy statement.
Several other states, mostly in the mid-west, already have a sandhill crane
hunting season. Tennessee could be next. To be considered is Why and How. Why
hunt sandhills, are the that overpopulated? To the how, for the pleasure of
a few hunters the entire viewing public would be compromised. Things would
change for sure, from Watchable Wildlife to Look-out for Buckshot.
