I detoured by the Walmart in Millington on the way home to my house in nw
Shelby County today. As I turned onto Russell Bond Rd, a crow flew up from
what appeared to be a very large carcass lying on the tarmac. As I got closer,
the supposed roadkill resolved itself into a Barred Owl mantling over a
squirrel it had evidently just taken in mid-scamper. I got within ten feet or
so of the owl and stuck my head out the truck window to congratulate it. As I
did, it took off, carrying the squirrel. The weight proved a bit much and it
dropped its prey on the verge before perching on a low branch. I drove on and
did not see if it returned to reclaim its prize.
