[TN-Bird] recent sightings et al

Last Sunday, 22Feb09, I had a BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH at my suet feeder. I
viewed it for about 30 minutes( 9:45AM to 10:15Am, CST) from my kitchen
window--no "Old Coot spectacular", but the first one I've ever had in my
yard in the 50+ years I've lived here.

The flock of 30 to 50 (varies during the day) Cedar Waxwings is really
enjoying the abundance of berries of the Hackberry trees on my lot next
door.

And in conclusion: I went out to Woods Reservoir,Franklin Co, yesterday
(,Thurs 27Feb09), to look for a flock of White Pelicans-- reported to me by
the brother-in-law of one of my sons--he lives on the lake. They flew over
him at Crownover bluff (upper end of lake, above Morris Ferry Bridge) so
close that he could see the "centerboard" on the ridge of the bills on some
of the birds--he estimated about 30 birds. We have had them in that area in
past years.

I did not find the pelicans, HOWEVER., the lake is down about 2 feet--the
lowest it has been since 1993. They are working on the floodgates, and
hundreds of coots, gulls, and sandhill cranes are having a sumptuous banquet
on the shell-fish of the exposed soil. I saw a kingfisher sitting in
amongst a long line of ring-billed gulls. At the headwaters (what we locals
call the place where the Elk River comes in, and the hunters have many
blinds), there were hundreds of killdeer, numerous snipe, and many other
shorebirds. I didn't identify them, because they are far away due to receded
water, and no trail easily accessible on the bank Our lake, in other words
has changed into shorebird territory--spring migration my be different at
Woods this year.
