[TN-Bird] purple martin nesting habits

This is just anecdotal, but seems to me that the yards I pass that have
lots of purple martin houses and gourds are usually empty looking the last
few years. I was also worried after Katrina, that many of the homes down
south would be destroyed and the martins would have to search for new
sites. I thought we might see surge in populations up here, but didn't
notice if we did. I got on some sites devoted to purple martins, and saw
no discussion of this being a problem. I also tried to find some statistics
as far as numbers being down (or up) and did not find that either. Anyone
on this list stay current with purple martin news? Perhaps I just haven't
found the right site.
I don't have purple martin houses personally, but my folks always had, and
I'm fond of the chortling acrobats.
