[TN-Bird] plain vanilla gtbh back in dekalb county

This morning at 0900 CDT I was 'scoping the Floating
Mill area of Center Hill Lake, DeKalb Co., TN, when
I noticed a large white heron perched in a tree on
an island in the embayment of the lake at Floating
Mill.  As I was 4000+ feet from the bird, it was
hard to do much with it even with a 40X 'scope,
though it did appear to be about as large as
two Great Blue Herons that were perched nearby.
I happened to notice that one of the boats near
the island belonged to Carol and Don Williams;
as I watched them, I noticed they were watching
the island with their bins, so I figured they
would have some details about the large white heron
when I contacted them, and they did.  The heron
appeared as large as the normal GTBHs to them, and they
were only 100 feet or so from it.  They indicated
that the legs of the white bird were not black, but
dull and dingy, though not yellow either.

Carol Williams said that the large white heron was
perched on top of an old Great Blue Heron nest when
she first saw it in a tree on the island; a "normal"
GTBH chased the white heron off the nest, so this
GWHE might be thinking about nesting in the area.

The Floating Mill area is not too far from the
Happy Hollow Boat Ramp where a definitive GWHE was
present last year from late Sep to mid Nov.; the
distance might be ten miles, probably less.

If more details about this bird surface, I will
pass them along.

BTW, Horned Grebes appeared at Floating Mill
Oct. 10. Anyone else getting them on other lakes?
