I have not seen a shrike in Lewis County in my 5 years here. I have
not cruised every road and every set of power lines in this small
county, but I would still be surprised if the total population was
more than 10 birds; I suspect it is probably zero. A Statewide
population of 29,000 birds is an average of one pair per 7.5 km2.
At this density I'd expect to encounter a pair roughly every 50-100
hrs afield; probably more often, actually, since shrikes are more
conspicuous than most species. They certainly don't seem that
numerous in Middle Tennessee; are there still shrike strongholds in
west Tennessee?
