I've heard complaints about a variety of species both in TN and in other =
states. Certainly the numbers you guys have dug up certainly seem quite =
wrong. The PIF folks have a good approach to calculating these population =
estimates and they are using a variety of available data sets. However, =
taking BBS data and other data sets and breaking it down from a continental=
or regional scale to a state level is very difficult for a variety of =
reasons. This is also not too far past the beginning stages of utilizing =
the available data for this purpose and it needs a lot of tweaking that =
they do not have the expertise to do (since they don't know the birds in =
specific counties, etc.). Also, analyses such as these are raising =
questions about detectability and needs to refine protocols, i.e. making =
BBS better.
There are obvious difficulties here and they are looking for feedback from =
folks like us on where their estimates went wrong and how to adjust them. =
They currently don't have online feedback available. If you have specific =
comments or questions, please forward them to me and I will compile and =
forward them onto the folks that have done this work. Forward comments to =
me at: scott.somershoe@xxxxxxxxxxx
Thanks,
Scott
