Folks,
Yesterday someone I know who is not a birder, but is an observant
person, asked me "could I have seen a pelican at Douglas dam?" I had
her describe the bird, and it sure sounds like a Brown Pelican. I
won't have an opportunity to go look, but if you're in the area,
please keep your eyes open and let us all know. It seems pretty hard
to mis-identify anything else as a pelican...
She described the bird as "HUGE, with big, fat belly and a really
long bill. It sat like this:" and she assumed a position with her
back/neck bent back and mouth pointed towards her chest, so that her
imaginary bill would run parallel to her imaginary long neck. After
I got over the humor of this, I told her that pelicans often rest in
that same position.
Charlie
