[TN-Bird] other items relating to the house wren thread of last week

CBC data (from the National Audubon Society CBC website) for the last
season in Tennessee revealed that 34 House Wrens were observed on 13
counts, in each case the most ever to occur in one CBC season in our
state. These data buttress the various anecdotal and more formal data
showing a long-term increase in the breeding numbers of this species in
Tennessee; at least it seems possible that as a semi-hardy species, such
as House Wren, increases as a breeder in an area, it might also increase
as a winter visitor in the same area.

Further support for this idea stems from the Winter Roadside Survey Barb
and I conduct in Putnam County. We cover 500 points in the county
during January every five years. In 1991, 1996, and 2001, we counted no
House Wren during this winter survey, but during January 2006 we tallied
three of these wrens, possibly an reflection of the larger breeding
population present nowadays (see my earlier message), which in turn is
possibly related to climate change in the area (although other causes of
the House Wren's breeding population increase here suggest themselves).
