I was pleasantly surprised Wednesday evening to look
outside my south facing window at home in the River
Plantation subdivision in Bellevue on the west side
of Nashville and spy a large loose flock of birds in
the air. A quick reach for my binoculars and a short
walk out the door treated me to 120+ COMMON NIGHTHAWKs.
The lower birds were already streaming north over my house,
while those higher up were initially circling over the
Harpeth River and the small lake next to Morton Mill Road.
After a minute or two the higher flock of about 35
followed in a northerly direction as well. It certainly
was brief but impressive sight.
