As long as Whooping Cranes are being mentioned in recent messages, let
me point out that Michael J. Hawkins enjoyed a good, longish (1 minute)
look at a Whooping Crane migrating with Sandhill Cranes in Jackson Co.,
TN (a bit northwest of Cookeville), on Nov. 25. Michael noted the black
wingtips of his bird in particular in describing his Whooper. I've
collected about 50 reports of migrant Sandhills in the Upper Cumberland
Region since late Oct., and Michael's sighting is the only one that
involved a Whooping Crane so far, but more independently migrating
Whooping Crane could still be on the way through the UCR.
Also, the juvennile Whooping Cranes that are part of Operation Migration
are now in KY and might make it into TN in the next few days, depending
on weather conditions. If you'd like to try to view these birds and
their ultralight leaders, check in with the Operation Migration website.
