As expected, it was a very busy, but frustrating morning in the yard
today (west Knox Co, Tues, 16 Sept).
The cold front finally came through Knoxville overnight Sun-Mon but
that didn't provide much turnover Monday morning. Monday night, I
went outside just after 9PM and already could hear several thrushes
and warblers calling as they flew over. It was the same each time
I ran out the rest of the night with a large migration flight
underway.
I got up before dawn and there were dozens of birds calling from
the woods, mainly thrushes, warblers and tanagers. Unfortunately,
most of the warbler action took place before sunrise with 20 or
more birds moving about in the trees but too dark to see more than
vague silhouettes and flitters of movement. After sunrise, the
woods belonged to the fruit-eaters. Our blackgum trees haven't
produced well the last 2 years. In fact, with the freeze and
draught last year, I didn't see a single fruit. This year though
the trees are loaded to the point of breaking so I've been
expecting a lot of action this fall. Thrushes, thrashers, tanagers,
woodpeckers, vireos and starlings were going after the fruit this
morning like crazy. Did manage a few warblers after sunrise but
nowhere near the numbers that were around before dawn.
