Yesterday Winston Walden and I made a trip to Bledsoe County to check on
the collared-dove population there and to see if there were any
Short-eared Owls on Ninemile Crossroad. We found 19 collared-doves at a
farm on the west side of Upper East Valley Rd. about 0.5 mi north of
Pikeville; we found four other collared-doves on Old Rt. 28 about 2
miles north of the intersection with Ninemile Crossroad.
We looked for the owls from 1630-1706 CST (1730-1806 EST)--fairly dark
by then--but we did not see any come out of the grassy field where they
were present from mid-January through mid-March last winter. However,
we did hear and then see (at 25 feet) a Marsh Wren that is apparently
wintering in that same field. I could not find any other reference to a
record of Marsh Wren for Bledsoe County but would be glad to hear of
such if anyone out there has one (or more).
We could not find any shrikes in Bledsoe County despite searching for
about 2.5 hrs. before heading to Ninemile Crossroad.
