[TN-Bird] Re: listserv archives

TN-Birders:

Mike Todd's suggestion that you read state bird lists
from a webstie may not be the best approach for everyone,
depending on your expected level of participation. I
agree it is a good way to read various state lists and I
do some of that myself.

However, TN-Bird will not allow anyone to post to the
list unless you are a subscriber to the TN-Bird list. I
can and do sometimes make an exception to that
rule on a case by case basis. That means
that if someone attempts to post to TN-Bird list but
is not subscribed, the listserver pass that message to
me for moderation. If I feel I know the individual or
that it is particularly worthwhile, I can pass on the
moderation and allow the message to be distributed
to the list.

Other state list are probably much the same.

I am not able to moderate message after message
sent to this list by nonsubscribers. I wouldn't get
much more done. I have many messages sent to
TN-Bird list every week (sometimes a dozen per day)
from nonsubscribers. Most of them get put in the
"waste basket" and dumped. We can't afford to have
an open posting policy on this list. The number of
virus-loaded messages and the heavy income of
commercial spam is too much of a risk and a burden
would be more than you would want.

But you do have other options. If you so desire, you
can subscribe to this list, set your flags to "no mail"
or possibly "vacation" status and then read from the
website without getting the e-mail posts from TN-Bird
list. Then if you choose to post to the list, you are
subscribed and your message will go to the list.

Others simply subscribe and get their mail in a
digest form which sends them one complete digest
of all mail once per day (usually sometime after
midnight). Persons on digest will sometimes miss
on rare bird reports for extended periods until the
digest is received.

We have peope who simply hate and resist any
conformity to this list or any list. They are simply
"too cool" or don't think it is necessary to have a
list style or list rules. I have to moderate some
of those persons.

I have to moderate anyone who "over quotes" the
10-line limit by simply clicking reply to rather lengthy
messages.

I have to moderate those who post without including
a subject line. I throw most of those in the "waste
basket" unless they apprea to be regular and
cooperative posters who might simply forget or
make an error.

If you want anything other than unsubcribe or
subscribe I may not have time to assist you. You
will have to make your own selection of options
by going to http://www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/lsg2.cgi/l=tn-bird
signing in with your e-mail address and a password
and manage your own account -- the same way I have
to manage it for you.

Messages such as this are not intended to tell
you all about what I do. It is about helping everyone
better understand how the list works and how
they can best use the list to their advantage.

Thanks to all of you for your cooperation.

Let's go birding........
