[TN-Bird] kudos to Lyn Bales and Ijams!

Hi folks,

On a rare morning when I don't need to rush out the door, I was just
flipping through the Knoxville News Sentinnel, and saw a good article
on the front of the "local" section.

Julie James, wife of Ijams Director, is covering the winter Olympics.
Many of you may know that there is a tradition of trading lapel pins
at the olympics. Julie Jones is trading a very attractive pin
featuring a Whooping Crane and the name Ijams Nature Center. In the
background are some mountains. The pin was designed by LYN BALES a
locally known author and presenter, who also happens to be a long
time member of the Knoxville Chapter of Tennessee Ornithological
Society and our newsletter editor. The paper picture the pin he
designed, and it is a nice one.

Ijams is in talks with Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, the world
base of the Whooping Crane recovery program. This is where the
captive breeding has been done for many years. The cranes that have
been led by ultralight through Tennessee, among other states, were
produced at Patuxent.

If all goes well, one day Ijams may recieve 2 Whooping Cranes that
are deemed "unreleasable" for a variety of reasons. In the past such
birds were euthanized, but now there is a push to use some of them as
sort of "educational ambassadors" by sending them to live in a couple
of nature centers across the country. Of course, only the very best
centers are being considered - ones with long traditions of solid
education, strong leadership, and the ability to reach many people.
Ijams, of course, meets those goals.

Way to Go Lyn and the other Ijams staff!

Charlie
