[TN-Bird] heron rookeries; grouse

While birding DeKalb Co. 21 March 2003, Carol Williams and I checked
three Great Blue Heron rookeries. A small colony with five nests on
Smith
Fork near Dowelltown was inactive; a small colony with 9 nests on Fall
Creek,
a large tributary of the Caney Fork River/Center Hill Lake near the
Sligo Bridge
over the river/lake on Rt. 70, had about 10 birds present with birds on
four of
the nests; the two-part colony near the Floating Mill Recreation Area
had only
one bird at a site with 17+ nests and 10+ birds, several brooding, at a
site with
10 nests. Carol has earlier reported on the rookery at Edgar Evins
State Park,
also in DeKalb Co., and she has heard from a TWRA officer that there are

still more rookeries in the upper end of Center Hill Lake, and these,
too, are
mainly in DeKalb.

While birding at the Peters Bridge River Access Point on Clear Fork in
the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area today, I got a
good look at a grouse at 25 feet for about one minutes; a few minutes
later a fellow in a horse-crawn wagon came by and said he had just
flushed a "pheasant" nearby, presumably meaning another grouse. I
have heard and seen grouse at this site in the past, and I have had at
least one report from another person who claimed to see one at the site
or near it, so this may be a good place for the grouseless to pick
up a Tennessee grouse (but if you don't, don't grouse). Directions to
