Saturday while watching my feeders in west Knox County from inside the sliding
glass door in my basement, out of the corner of my eye I saw a large bird (a
hawk no doubt) make a split-second landing beside two Helmeted Guinea Fowl
beneath a sunflower seed feeder. The hawk was gone by the time its arrival
registered with me (I was watching another feeder at the time) so I can't say
what species it was. I don't know if its attack was successful or not; a
minute before there had been a male Cardinal and a male Towhee beneath that
feeder but whether one of them or perhaps a different bird made a meal for the
hawk I can't say. The guineas reacted as though in shock. They remained
uncharacteristically silent and basically froze in position, eventually edging
a few inches closer to the thicket, but it was 5 minutes or so before they
resumed feeding and before any other bird ventured to the feeders.
