Unfortunately, I sent my previous message without a careful reading, and my
typo reads that "the man" attracting migrating birds, and should have read
"them" attracting migrating birds. I hope it is clear to all that it would
be the female producing the fruits, not the male.
Meredith, thanks for the tip on 'Miss Scarlett' and also about freezing
berries. I knew a man (Jack Finch, who made the very best bluebird houses)
who put lots of dogwood berries in the freezer each year for "his"
bluebirds. It's a great idea...and you are right about the heavy fruit load
on everything this year, I guess making up for last year. Besides the ones
you mentioned, I've seen lots of "fox grape" this year. I also see lots of
birds feeding on the red berries of sumac, but they may not need freezing -
they seem to hold on the plant pretty well through the winter.
As for poke, they do love it, especially the mockinbirds and thrashers. By
the way, my little Jack Russell terrier mix, Tadpole, must have squeezed
her way through a big downed pokeweed last week in the early morning dew.
Her mostly white coat was gorgeously striped with purple, sort of mottled
and water colored by the dew, but still quite vivid. I got pictures to
prove it.
