River Plantation Subdivision Davidson Co. Bellevue, TN 2011 Mar. 29 On Tuesday evening just before supper time there was again a constant crow commotion outside our house. Four crows were calling and moving around a small densely wooded area next to the Harpeth River, perhaps 75 yards from our front door. From our doorstep I visually searched the area with binoculars for a few minutes but came up empty, as did several of the crows who gave up and left after a few minutes. However, after I had eaten dinner I went out front, and one of the crows was still vociforously calling and swooping around the same area of dead trees and tangled vines. When two of its cousins returned, the noise and activity ratcheted up several notches, but I still could not find the object of their interest. I finally decided to have a closer look. I went into the house to get a coat, preparing to walk down the steep bank and wander through the wooded area. However, as I stepped outside I noticed that the center of crow activity had shifted its focus ever so slightly. They were mobbing branches in a much taller tree. Now it was easy to see the object of their complaint, a GREAT HORNED OWL. The owl largely ignored the crows, but one crow, more persistent than the rest, kept at it. After nearly an hour of work, I watched the final crow give up its harassment and fly away. Having vanquished its noisy tormentors by ignoring them, the owl remained in the tree for some time as darkness began to fall. The score for this round of heavyweight action: Owl 1, Crows O.
