[TN-Bird] cerulean warbler surveys in the upper cumberland region 2008

Results of various efforts to survey some Cerulean Warbler populations
in the UCR this year follow:

1. A non-standard driving route of 50 miles in western Putnam Co., TN,
conducted May 20 resulted in 36 CERWs being recorded, up from 28
recorded along the same route during May 2007 and during May 2006, but
down from 42 and 47 recorded along it during May 2005 and May 2004.

2. A non-standard walking route of 10 miles in Frozen Head State Natural
Area, Morgan Co., TN, June 5 resulted in 39 CERWs being recorded, up
from 35 in 2007 and 33 in 2006, but way down from the 106 recorded in
1994.

3. A standard set of 50 PIF point counts in western Putnam Co., TN,
conducted June 4-5, 9, and 11 resulted in 20 CERWs being recorded, way
down from the 33 recorded on the same points 5-8 June 2007; not sure if
the slightly later dates for two of the sets of points this year had a
bearing on the change in numbers, but that is possible.

4. The DeKalb County Foray conducted May 23-26, 2008, resulted in
coverage of all 40 blocks into which the county had been divided; 13
observers spent 116.5 hours counting birds in the county, including 38
CERWs in 11 of the blocks. There are no previous foray data from DeKalb
County against which these results can be compared. However, an effort
by Melinda Welton to locate CERWs in DeKalb County during June 2007
resulted in 33 CERWs being located; thanks to Melinda for sharing those
data.

As you can see, the results of CERW surveying in the UCR this year are a
bit conflicting, some survey efforts showing increases in CERW
populations and some showing decreases (with the point count data being
especially worrisome, as point counts are the most reliable means of
monitoring bird populations among the means noted above).

Any other thoughts on the status of CERWs in the UCR (or elsewhere in TN
or KY) this year are welcome.

Steve
