I conducted a quick review of the Breeding Bird Survey routes in TN this
morning, finding that 12 of the state's 47 routes were not conducted in
2007 or 2008, a far cry from the 46 routes conducted in 2004, the recent
highwater mark for BBS coverage around the state.
Several routes appear to have languished for lack of a sponsor during
several recent years and may remain in that condition, though I can't be
sure of this because results from 2009 are currently unavailable, but I
would still encourage anyone with good ear-birding skills to contact the
TN BBS coordinator (Chuck Nicholson) and see if there are routes that
need coverage in 2010.
In an era when many species of birds are undergoing population
decreases, it is sad not to have as much breeding season data as
possible, especially when there are competent folks out there to conduct
breeding birds surveys, point counts, and other bird-monitoring surveys.
