I was fortunate to have a female blackgum (they are dioecious, trees are
either male or female) at my former residence, and can attest to the man
migrating birds that are attracted to the fruit. Unfortunately the trees
are rarely sold by gender, and of course, one would need both a female and
a male close by for pollination. This is true of persimmon and spicebush as
well, and both of these are great for birdwatching in the fall. Somebody,
somewhere, should name and propagate these by gender just folks wishing to
plant for the birds, or maybe that nursery does exist and I just don't know
of it. Should, that sort of falls under my job description, huh?
