Nothing Earth-shattering but a couple of notes on some birds the last couple days. Tuesday night (22 June) about 11PM, I was outside at our home in west Knoxville checking the lights for interesting moths when a loud "qwuok" from just a few feet directly overhead scared the livin' daylights out of me. A series of "qwuok"s followed, tracing a path through the night sky toward the marshy area at the bottom of our ridge near the intersection of Bob Kirby Road and Middlebrook Pike where the Barred Owls live. Must've been flying just about roof level. Yardbird #122, Black-crowned Night-Heron. As I left my "other" job at UT this morning (23 June), I heard a Northern Parula singing along Second Creek. I haven't known them to breed here in past years and this was the first time I have noticed one here this summer. Maybe some local post-breeding dispersal? Back at NTRC off of Pellissippi in west Knox Co., we've had a Yellow-breasted in the scrub around the parking lot. A Prairie Warbler was hanging around at least into late May as well in what would be appropriate breeding habitat. Haven't heard him in the last couple weeks.
