[TN-Bird] Zen of Birding

Man-O-Man! All my landscaping and feeding efforts sure paid
off today. My birds really love me, I'm sure of it. (Yes
Carol, they love you too!) Nothing unusual, just elbow to
elbow, filling every window frame. At least 20 towhees.
We've had high numbers this winter, but I don't recall ever
having so many.

During these cold, snowy times, I see lots of birds hunkered
down on the road, blacktop. They don't seem to be
foraging. More like meditating. And I can get much closer
to them than usual before they fly, and they don't fly very
far. today I saw about 4 thrushes, hermit I presume, and 2
phoebes, a carolina wren and several sparrows doing this on
my walk today.

Question: Is it just the heat of the road they are after?
Does the cold just slow them down? A little known spiritual
ritual? Anybody???

Hope they all make it back tomorrow...
