Wallace,
Add Knox County to that list. Yellow-crowneds nested for three years
along the Third Creek Greenway in downtown Knoxville from 1998-2000.
They were first found by Boyd Sharp and Tony Headrick while working
the Knox County Spring Count (which will be on 27 April this year while
I have everyone's attention, come count with us). In the early summer
of 2000, a tornado damaged the area where they nested and, to my
knowledge, they haven't been seen since. I think there were two nests
the first year, 4-5 the second, not sure about the third year before
the tornado hit (need to check my notes, let me know if you'd like more
details though it should be in the Valley Birds archive).
They are also regularly seen around the Powell Airport in north Knox Co
and I believe that breeding has been confirmed in the past but I would
need to double check that (should be mentioned in the Breeding Atlas).
I will point out that the airport is private property and the owner
is VERY birder UNfriendly.
I also had an adult in full breeding plumage in June of 2000 (I believe
the year is correct, don't have my records with me as you can tell)
at "The Ponds" in New Market, Jefferson Co. I spotted him hanging
around the beaver dam a few times but could never locate a nest.
