[TN-Bird] Yellow-crowned Night-Heron Nest Memphis

Shelby County Midtown Memphis 6.29.06

There is a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nest in a large oak tree directly
across the street from my home at 349 Hawthorne Street in midtown Memphis.
Robinson tree service has a construction crane in the yard and is in process
of taking the tree down. This activity has left the nest well exposed. At
least two young birds are in the nest and an urban forester is planning to
rescue them tomorrow morning before the rest of the tree is taken down. The
young are standing up and flapping there wings but don't seem quite ready to
fly.

Yellow-crowned knight-Herons are not rare birds in Memphis and have been
known to nest in yards in midtown. The owner of the tree indicated that he
has seen four adult birds and thinks a second pair may be nesting in the
neighborhood. I've seen and heard the adults flying around but did not
realize there was a nest.

I'll be sorry to see both the tree and the birds go.
