Monday afternoon (5-27-03) I was birding my favorite haunt here in Blount
County and saw a rather large bird fly into a tree near me. It was hidden
behind a cluster of leaves, but with some maneuvering I managed to get a
good look at a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. After a few minutes another one flew
in and they proceeded to get very friendly with each other. Which I assume
means that they will be nesting somewhere nearby. Hopefully I will see them
again and maybe find where they build their nest.
This area has very diverse habitat, and I have seen lots of Chats and Common
Yellowthroats, Indigo Buntings, Chipping and Field Sparrows, other Sparrows
I'm not sure of, Red-winged Blackbirds, Green and Black-crowned Herons,
Great Blue Herons, Wood Ducks, Mallards, C. Geese, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers,
House Wrens, and the usual Cardinals, Titmice, etc., and the occasional
warbler. Not to mention the deer, fox, beaver, and muskrats that live here.
When I can get there late enough in the evening, I'm usually rewarded by
seeing a Great Horned Owl. I feel so blessed to have a little refuge to
escape to and see the gifts of nature that God has given us.
