[TN-Bird] Re: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Nat Winston's post reminded me of something I
wanted to call attention to this winter, having to
do with sapsuckers and hummingbirds.

I wonder if winter hummers in Tennessee might
be more likely to be present in areas where
there are also wintering sapsuckers that provide
drill holes and, consequently, sap for the hummers
and less likely to be present in areas where there
are no wintering sapsuckers or at least where the sapsucker population is
thinly distributed.

The Rufous Hummingbird currently in Putnam
County is present at a site where a sapsucker
has also been seen.

This possible winter association may already have
been explored by the hummingbird aficionados
out there, but, if not, it could use some study,
given the known propensity of more northern
hummingbirds to survive in early spring by using
sap from sapsucker drill holes.
