[TN-Bird] Yellow bellied sapsucker

Sunday afternoon around 4 p.m. on a very cold, windy day I watched a yellow
bellied sapsucker seek shelter in my pine tree in a vertical key hole
shaped depression (a couple of inches deep), The sapsucker clung to the
side of the tree and appeared to go to sleep; she was still there when it
got too dark to see, but if I hadn't seen her go there I would probably have
been unaware of her presence. At first I could make out the red on the top
of her head but as it got gradually darker she completely blended in with
the tree and I could only verify her presence by looking through binoculars
(I was in the house looking through a window about 15-20 feet distant). She
was undisturbed by smaller birds moving around on the tree right in front of
her.

I found this particularly interesting in that the very first time I ever saw
a yellow bellied sapsucker (January 12, 2003) it was in the exact same place
and circumstance... late afternoon, almost too dark to see the bird, and it
hunkered down in the depression and appeared to be settling in for the
night.
