[TN-Bird] Yard "sharpie"

Happy New Year,

Had a little excitement here in the Charlotte Park section of West Nashville
when an immature sharp-shinned hawk perched in a hackberry tree directly in
line with my French doors. Its square tail (with a little notch) and slender
frame indicated that it was NOT one of my Cooper's, and I did get a pretty
decent photo before it saw that the "smorgabird" was vacant and flew away to
the south toward West Meade. All my birds had gone into hiding as soon as the
sharpie entered the neighborhood. I've had sharp-shinneds fly over before,
but I don't remember that any have landed. Of course, I cannot be certain
due to some memory loss since my illness. Also, my yard list which I kept
posted on my kitchen wall, was packed or tossed by the HASMAT team that
decontaminated my house, so I cannot check.

Crows are everywhere here today, My house is located toward the center of a
block, so I have a good view down through the back yards of 15 houses that
face the intersecting streets for about a normal two block distance. Crows
are in every back yard today as are several hundred starlings. All my usual
feeder birds are eating everything in sight. My feisty little song sparrow is
eating nearest the door and chasing all the other birds that come into its
"territory."

Young squirrels, about half the size of their parents, are scampering around
in my trees playing chase and looking for food.

Cheers Y happy birding,

Dee Thompson
