The pond area that collapsed is adjacent to Swan Pond Road at the north end
of the ash ponds area. About 1970 when I started birding, the water level in
the ponds immediately adjacent to Swan Pond Road was no higher than the road
and you could bird it from the side of Swan Pond Road. Since then, the
dikes adjacent to the road have been raised and are the highest on the site.
The dike that collapsed is on the far side of the pond from the plant,
adjacent to the Swan Pond embayment and the main channel of the Emory River.
See http://www.tva.gov/emergency/ashslide_kingston.htm for a good video of
the aftermath.
Expect it to be some time before birders can work the area as there are much
higher immediate priorities.

Wow. Saw this on the local news after getting back in town late Sunday and
wondered if anyone had mentioned this. For those who may not have caught
on, the dike that collapsed is one of those containing the ash pits at
Kingston Steam Plant in Roane Co, TN... a very popular birding spot. It
will be interesting to see how this will affect management there and access
to the area. (Not to take away of course from the losses suffered by those
families).
