TN-birders,
I just returned last night from a week on Kaua'i, with some great birding. But,
upon checking email this morning I see I'm definitely not alone. I had a
sneaking suspicion that I would miss some good birds while I was gone, and did
that ever come true. I hope to head west tomorrow, if I can get my wife to turn
her head long enough for me to sneak off, for that White-faced Ibis that has
eluded my state list. What an amazing week for TN rarities (and not all along
the mighty Mississip) , as Jeff predicted before I left.
The following section of the email does not pertain to birding in TN, so feel
free to disregard.
Regarding my Hawaii trip, I'll be putting together a trip report, and posting
alot of pictures once I get caught up on some stuff around here. My trip was
very successful, especially since it wasn't a "birding trip". I birded about
half the time we were gone, and in three and a half HARD days of birding I
covered pretty well all of the productive areas on the island. This total
includes almost a full day of hiking 8 miles of the Pihea Ridge/Alaki Swamp
trail in the upper reaches of Kaua'is mountains. This paid off with 7 of the 8
remaining Hawaii endemics remaining on Kaua'i, with 4 of these endemic just to
Kaua'i.
My total for the island was 55 species, which doesn't sound like much, but the
norm for a two-week tour of all the islands is 100 species + or - 5. I didn't
miss any species that I had a decent shot at, and picked up several that I
wasn't expecting to get, although a few of these birds held out to the last
day. As it's a short list, I'm posting a species list below.
