Here along the Mississippi River, we are still blessed with a pretty good
population of Loggerhead Shrikes and in some areas fairly dense populations in
both winter and summer seasons. I had decided to record the locations of
every Loggerhead Shrike that I see in my birding travels this year which will
be
mainly along the Mississippi River. I've not covered many roads that would
probably produce more records but just usually follow my regular birding
routes. I try not to list the birds twice at the same locations and now that
nesting has started, I'll start a new list of summer or breeding locations and
nests. In the last 2 weeks I've noted nests at 3 locations but I've recorded
pairs together even in January.
So far this year I have located 69 individual birds at 64 GPS locations (5
pairs) in the following counties:
TENNESSEE - Shelby 3, Tipton 2, Lauderdale 7, Haywood 1, Dyer 9 and Lake 3
ARKANSAS - Crittenden 19
MISSISSIPPI - DeSoto 9, Tunica 10
It will be interesting to see the difference in density between the summer
and winter seasons.
Good Birding !!!
