The last trickle of migrant shorebirds made for slim pickings. Black and
white figures dot the landscape as Black-necked Stilts are mostly down to
sitting eggs and a few unmated males being chased around. There are still
Killdeer
making scrapes, others tending puff ball young and trying to keep up with
racing teens.
On Saturday, I counted 65 Semipalmated Sandpipers, that dwindle to 35 on
Sunday and hit a big 5 on Monday. White-rumped Sandpipers went from 4, to 1, to
a big Zero but we might get a few more over the next two weeks, although they
started through early and might finish that way. A single Pectoral that had
been hanging around left on Saturday and it will be 4 or 5 weeks before we see
any returns. Least Sandpipers were down to 3 birds on Saturday, 1 on Sunday
but back up to 5 on Monday, being small and sneaky they are hard to keep up
with and the first returns are just a little over 3 weeks away. A surprise on
Monday was a single Spotted Sandpiper that appeared to be a male (sparse
spots). They have nested here once before, maybe again?
Good Birding !!!
