One completed empty Willow Flycatcher nest with snapping adult 3 feet away...
The nest was 4.5 ft up in a 6 ft opposite-leaved sapling, in 6 ft cattails, 15
ft from the edge of the water, near the north end of the water.
Last spring David Hollie and friends found a Willow Flycatcher nest about 500
ft from today's location. It was 7 ft up in a Black Willow, very exposed
location, visible from the gravel road. That nest fledged 4 young.
The nest locations are very different. I had been hearing a Willow, and
looking in Willow trees for a nest, unsuccessfully. I first thought today's
nest was a Red-winged Blackbird, from a distance, mostly because of the
location, but at a closer view it was too small and too tightly woven. Then
the adult appeared and let me know whose nest it was.
Pictures of nest and adult available. I intend to follow this nest; if someone
else would like to see it and/or help keep records, please let me know.
Other marsh nests this season:
Virginia Rail 5
Least Bittern 10
Red-winged Blackbird 73
