I observed a singing male Willow Flycatcher this evening at the
intersection of Brown's Bridge Road and Holly Creek Road in the Tusculum
area of Greene County. In addition to hearing it sing repeatedly off
and on for about a half hour, I also often heard it call (not the
characteristic "whit" call, but a raspy "rrrrrrt" that was sometimes
extended into the full song: "fitz-bew" or "reetz-you"). I also saw it
at close range for several minutes--close enough to see the
pinkish-orange lower mandible and the thin eyering.
Charles P. Nicholson's Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee lists
Willow Flycatcher as a possible nester in two blocks in northern Greene
County. Several times over the last six years, at least two
birders--Ben Britton and I--have found singing Willows in the western
part of the county in June.
