[TN-Bird] White-faced Ibis at TVA Lake

Sept. 25, 2004
TVA Lake, Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

I checked TVA Lake a few times before I left at noon for lunch but nothing
interesting among the regular ducks except a couple of offspring evidently from
the leucistic bird that has been around all summer. The single immature
Black-necked Stilt was there all morning looking pretty lonely.

I went to President's Island to look over the doves and scan McKellar Lake.
Here I found 9 Caspian Terns, 5 Forster's, 2 Least Terns and 2 Ring-billed
Gulls on the only sand bar still out. On the Mississippi River at the upper end
of
Robinson Caruso Island there were 7 Caspian Terns plus 117 DC Cormorants
flying down the river and 17 Blue-winged Teal skimming the rising waters
heading
south.

I was back at TVA Lake a little after 2 PM; standing and preening in among
the ducks and cormorants was a dark Ibis. My first thoughts were that it was a
White-faced and I spent about 45 minutes with the bird and took a few photos.
Tonight, after looking at the photos, I'm certain is was a White-faced Ibis in
first fall plumage. I also had a group of 35 White Pelicans and another group
of 17 soaring over President's Island.

Unfortunately the White-faced Ibis was not present when I last checked the
lake just before 6 PM. Maybe it went to roost with the egrets and will visit us
again tomorrow.

Good Birding!!!
