David Haggard is quoted in a fairly lengthy discussion on characteristics
and habits of the White Pelican.
This included the following:
"........Because of their weight and massive wingspan, white pelicans can't
take off from dry land," he explained. "Pelicans usually take off from
water by flapping their wings and running across the surface until they are
airborne."

Haggard needs to recheck his facts. I've seen these birds take off from land
around here when roosting on sandbars and also at their nesting sites in the
Dakotas. When nesting in large colonies, taking off from land would be a
prerequisite for survival. I suggest reading Paul A. Johnsgard's, Cormorants,
Darters, and Pelicans of the World. Just thought I'd quash the info before
another urban myth was started ;o0..................
