In May of 1982, an enterprising group of sixteen Tennessee birders came into White County and conducted a four-day breeding bird foray. Over a four-day period, these birders were able to document the presence of 98 species, including two non-breeding shorebird species. Among species of particular interest were Ruffed Grouse, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Loggerhead Shrike (15), Golden-winged Warbler (4), Cerulean Warbler, and Swainson?s Warbler. All in all, it was an impressive effort and left us with a priceless snapshot of avian history. On May 25-28 of this year, we would like to honor the 25th anniversary of that birding exploit by duplicating the 1982 White County Breeding Bird Foray. Plans are to send teams out each of the four days to work in assigned areas, with the goal of duplicating the 1982 foray. Needless to say, the comparison of data between the two forays would provide us with valuable insight into the changing avian community of White County. With this posting, we would like to extend an invitation to any interested party to join us in this enterprise. Those agreeing to work can choose to do so for a single day or for any combination of days up to and including all four. If you are coming from outside the area and are in need of housing, I may be able to arrange free housing for two or three individuals on a first come, first served basis. There is also a local motel in Sparta (Royal Inn) and several in Cookeville (15 miles to the north). I would be glad to assist anyone coming in making whatever housing arrangements we can. It is important that volunteers contact me as soon as possible so that we can begin the work of setting up territories for each of the four days. It would also be good if we could get an early start on housing arrangements. Please consider participating in this unique and enjoyable opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the avian history of Tennessee. We?d love to have you. If interested, contact me privately via e-mail and we will go from there. Looking forward to May 25-28.
