[TN-Bird] Weekend Shorebirds

June 14-15, 2008
West TN

At the pits in Memphis, 5 White-rumped Sandpipers moved in while the Stilt
Sandpiper and Lesser Yellowlegs played buddies, 3 new Least Sandpipers brought
that total also to 5. The male and female Spotted Sandpipers were seen
together again. The male is but faintly spotted and appears to be a first
summer
bird while the "cougar" is an older woman. Black-necked Stilts are hatching in
every direction and Killdeer numbers are way up. All this while an adult
Cooper's Hawk made two kills while I was there. It carried a grackle and a
young
Killdeer southeast in a little over 2 hours. Both times the bird came in low
and jumped a levee to surprise both me and everyone else. Just barely got
quick photos as the Cooper's sped away.

At Loop Road and Highway 103, in Dyer Co, there were 2 White-rumped, and
single Least and Spotted Sandpipers on one side of the road and a Lesser
Yellowlegs, 2 Least and 4 Black-necked Stilts on the other. At Mud Lake in
Lake Co,
There were 2 White-rumps, 3 Least, a Pectoral and 6 black-necked Stilts plus
a surprise pair of Semipalmated Plovers. A Bald Eagle here, took a young duck
and proceeded to pluck it before going east with its plunder.

At the Phillippy Pits there was a gimpy Black-necked Stilt, and 2
White-rumped Sandpipers.
Good Birding !!!
