[TN-Bird] Weekend Meanders - Banded Red-tailed Hawk

June 25-26, 2005
West TN and Mississippi Co. AR

I spent most of the weekend checking out dry and dusty shorebird habitat.
The first shorebirds are back but just a sprinkling or should I say a dusting.
At Memphis there were 9 Least Sandpipers and a surprise, lone Semipalmated
Plover. I counted 374 Killdeer pacing around the pits and still we have quite a

few active Black-necked Stilt nests.
The only other shorebirds were a single Lesser Yellowlegs at White Lake
Refuge, 6 Least Sandpipers at Bogota, and a small flock of 12 or so on the
Tiptonville Bar.

There are now 2 pair of Western Kingbirds at Ensley Bottoms and one pair
seems to have a nest while our first nest has failed. I checked on the Western
Kingbird nests in Arkansas on my way up I-55 and found another nests bringing
the total to four. The other 3 nests still had attending adults.

Not much found north of the Obion River and the best bird of the weekend was
seen at Chickasaw NWR, an adult Common Moorhen. This species is having a
tough time here in west TN. I never saw but the one bird. There were also 22
White Pelicans left over from last week.

Saturday, there was an immature Red-tailed Hawk at Eagle Lake Refuge here in
Shelby Co. that was screaming its head off looking for food. The bird was
banded and I could only read the last three numbers if anyone knows who banded
it, I've got good photos of bird and band.

Good Birding!!!
