The International Rusty Blackbird Working Group is taking the first steps to
organize a winter blitz of birding activity to discover those places that
have RUBLs and particularly those areas that support relatively large
flocks. We are working with ebird to gather and visualize the results. You
might wonder why we don't just stick with Christmas Bird Count (CBC) data.
We believe that the CBC is done before the population has settled out into
its more stable mid-winter distribution. Furthermore, finding RUBLs away
from large known roosts is often difficult because the species is quiet. But
it is easier in February as the males start singing and the foraging flocks
become much more detectable.
One of our first steps is to identify a team leader for each of the 23
states in the core winter area. The team leader would be primarily involved
with getting the word out and talking up the project so we have good birder
turn-out. Hopefully, the workload will not be onerous.
We have 14 states covered so far. But we have no one yet for TENNESSEE and
Tennessee is a critical state to cover for Rusties. We need someone who is
enthusiastic, a good networker and creative. Needless to say, I would be
happy to talk through the project in more detail with you or anyone else who
is interested in being a state captain. Also, if you have any ideas where to
post a blurb please let me know.
Any arrows in the right direction will be appreciated! Please contact me
