TN-Birders:
The best I can tell, the virus that some of you detected in a message sent
in my name to TN-Birds was not sent from my computer. It appears to be a
message sent by a proxy mailer to TN-Birds.
As best I can determine, it appears that it was an automated posting to the
list. It was sent in my name because it captured my jwcoffey (which is
first address at the top of the mailing list of TN-Birds subscribers).
Since the list determined that I am a subscriber, it allowed it to be
distributed to the list.
A careful check of the header of the message sent in my jwcoffey name shows
it was sent to TN-Birds listserv by: verison net.
Message sent by my listserver are by: ntelos.net
I have a Norton Corporate Edition virus detector which has not found that
virus on my machine. Since I first detected the TN-Birds virus message in
my name by reading my e-mail on a web mail program(a web page), I did not
allow the virus message to be downloaded to my computer. It was deleted
directly off the server.
In addition, I do not keep any e-mail addresses in my Microsoft Outlook
address book so the virus could not send from that typical addressing source.
Further, this message and most of my messages are sent from a Eudora Light
mail program (this one is). The header source on the virus message does not
indicate that the virus message was sent by either of those programs.
I also have a Norton Personal Firewall which has not detected any attempted
attack on my computer.
I keep all of these protection devices updated on my computer.
That's the best I can determine. I hate it that a virus was transmitted to
TN-Birds Net. We almost never have one to be delivered to this list. The
listserver probably picks up a dozen or more attempts a month. I sometimes
see several a week and have seen several attempts in one day.
Everyone should have a good virus protection program and keep it up to date.
Let's go birding....
