We checked out Rankin Bottoms (RB) by car, Ten Islands (TI) -between RB & DB
- by canoe, and Dutch Bottoms (DB) from Newport Beach (across from DB church
on 25E). Douglas Lake elevation is 965' - lots of succulent mudflat,
continuing to provide for shorebirds. Their numbers have been holding up
(100+) since midsummer. Highlights:
Canada Goose (23, TI flyby)
Green winged teal (17, TI)
Pied-billed grebe (4, DB)
Horned grebe (2, DB)
Double-crested cormorant (DB, TI)
Great blue heron (57)
Great egret (2, RB)
Sharp-shinned hawk (RB)
Peregrine falcon (adult, TI)
Sandhill crane (3, TI)
Killdeer (63)
Least sandpiper (22 DB, 41 TI)
Dunlin (66 DB, 9 TI [those were in Jefferson county, Don])
YB sapsucker (RB)
Golden-crowned kinglet (3, RB)
Hermit thrush (RB)
Yellow-rumped warbler (9, RB)
