Today at Shelby Farms there weren't too many migrants left; some waxwings,
Swainson's Thrushes and a Blackburnian. Went to the trail between the regular
Wolf River trail and Germantown Rd trail; there I heard a song. I thought
funny, sounds like a Painted Bunting. After hearing it many times I concluded
it was a Painted, but wanted to see it. Looked throughout the tree I thought
it was in, not seeing anything. Finally, I see it, with its red belly and blue
head, perched atop a telephone pole, on north side of Moore Rd. It flew into
thicket and vanished. Later went back; now it was singing on the trail side
(south); tried to see it, then heard it coming from the north side again. A
very skittish PABU. Got another glimpse as it flew away.
There are apparently only a few records for Shelby Farms. We expect them
close to the Miss. River, in the floodplain, but I was very surprised to find
it here, a good fifteen miles east of the river.
Pied-bill Grebe back at the fish farm, probably nesting again this year as
last.
