Pickett Co.
6-22-08
This morning about 6:15, I looked out in my backyard and saw a hen turkey
cautiously walking around. Then two more hens appeared checking things out.
Then out of the raspberry patch chicks about the size of adult quails came
running out and I started counting. At eleven I stopped, then I noticed
something moving in the tops of the briars three more flew down. Looking
closely, I saw more chicks moving in the tops feeding on the berries! I don't
remember having seen this before. Finally when all were on the ground I
counted over and over and decided there were eighteen. They wandered around
taking dust baths, etc. Then they headed back for more berries, this time the
hens went with them and ate what they could reach.
I heard the last cicadas 6-16-08. In this area of Pickett Co. their singing
was deafening for a while. Birds had a field day. I imagine the young birds
gagged every time they saw their parents coming with a beak full of bugs with
wings and legs moving around.
It would be hard for me to decide if this bounty of free meals would make a
deference in successful nesting. How would one go about making a decision?
