[TN-Bird] Re: Trip to Cookeville

It was good to have David Chaffin report on his sighting of Cliff
Swallow near Algood in Putnam County; this is a new nesting site, as far
as I know, for this swallow in the county. All other nesting sites have
been in the far western end of the county in the Central Basin
physiographic province, so it is quite interesting to have a nesting
site in the Highland Rim physiographic province of the county.

The first edition of Birds of Putnam County, Tennessee (1993), lists the
Cliff Swallow as a very uncommon, not uncommon, summer species in Putnam
County, and the species remains in that status, though it must certainly
be increasing slowly.

For those who visit Cookeville and surrounding Putnam County, the online
second edition of Birds of Putnam County, Tennessee (2006-2009) would be
the better source to consult for the status of birds in that county in
the future. Here is a link to that source:

Subject: [TN-Bird] Trip to Cookeville

TN birders,
While recouping after surgery, Becky and I went to Cookeville for a
family reunion.? Had a few birds that were of interest to me.? Upon
arrival to Becky's parents house, or actually just before at the
Junction of Hwy-111 and Algood Hwy, had a cliff swallow nest on the
overpass with several birds in attendance.? Stedman's book, Birds of
Putnam County, Tennessee lists this species as an uncommon summer
nester.? Of the time spent in the county over the years, I had not
previouslyconnected with this species.

Just before entering Grassy Cove during the return trip on Hwy 68 at the
junction of the Cumberland Trail, in about 10 minutes, had yellow-billed
cuckcoo, red-eyed vireo, blue-gray gnatcatcher, scarlet tanager, black
and white warbler, white-breasted nuthatch, carolina checkadee, mourning
dove, and northern cardinal.? The first three were new for the county
for me.

Finally, stopped at one of the pulloffs just beyond Grandview, and had
indigo bunting, scarlet tanager, and carolina wren.? Habitat was
smoothered with cudzu.? The tanager was new for Rhea Co, as were the
chimney swifts in Dayton on our drive through.
