[TN-Bird] Tremont banding

Hi folks,

The third banding day of the 2004 MAPS season at Tremont on June 11
was a success. We caught 13 birds, including some juvenile Louisana
Waterthrushes. This is important news because we are concerned about
how many nests were lost in the big rain event of May 6-8 2003.
Waterthrushes nest low on the river banks, and we had only captured
one during the first 2 banding days this year, whereas this was far
and away the most numerous species in our nets in previous years.

The day was exciting for another reason. 14 year-old Lindsay
Crawford, who started helping us last year, removed her first bird
from a net. And her second. By the end of the day, she had removed
a total of 4 birds without assistance. I?m not sure who was
proudest; Lindsay, me or her mom Audrey. Judging from my nerves, I
will likely not be the one to teach my child how to drive?

Birds in the nets included:

Northern Cardinal, 1 recaptured, 1 unbanded
Louisiana Waterthrush: 1 recapture, 1 unbanded, 4 new. 5 of the 6
are hatch-year birds.
Red-eyed Vireo: 2 recaptures, 1 new,
Indigo Bunting: 1 new
Eastern Phoebe: 1 new (the first bird Lindsay extracted!)

8 of our 10 Louisiana Waterthrush captures were hatched this year.
One of the juvies captured on June 3 was recaptured today.

Other wildlife sightings today included TWO ?Upland? Corn Snakes, one
Black Racer and one Garter Snake, one Southeastern Five-lined Skink,
and multiple Five-lined Skinks. The racer put on quite a show with
the aggressive posturing typical of that species: raising the front
one foot of it?s body, flattening it?s head into a very worthy
rendition of a viper shape, opening it?s white-lined mouth very wide
ala a Cottonmouth (which does not exist in the Smokies) and swining
it?s head back and forth before cartwheeling around and taking off at
top speed.

Our next planned banding day is Tuesday June 22. nets open at 6:20
am. All are invited.

Charlie
