Gilbert Derouen and Bryan Stevens birded a couple of hours at Austin Springs
on Tuesday, March 14. Not much activity outside of the swarms of Tree
Swallows. We both could not figure out how to actually count the Tree Swallows.
They
swarmed over every section of the river channels running through the mudflats
at Austin Springs. And, no matter how much we scanned, every swallow IDed as a
Tree Swallow.
A few years ago, I remember seeing Tree Swallows swooping over almost all of
Wilbur Lake in Carter County. It's just difficult for me to come up with a
count for these sorts of flocks.

A few other birds included Red-tailed Hawk, 3 Wilson's Snipe, six Killdeer
and an American Black Duck and Mallards and Canada Geese.

At St. John's pond in Watauga, TN, we saw an American Kestrel.

Later, at home in Hampton, at dusk, I observed about 100 American Robins
flying to roost in some evergreens.

Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
